Programme Archive: 2002/03 Season

08 November 2018

The next instalment of Brighton & Hove Albion programmes are available on the Programme Archive, as we take a look back at the 2002/03 Division One season, which saw the Seagulls almost escape relegation on the final day of the season.

Consecutive promotions saw Albion return to the second flight after ten years away, but with the constraints of playing at the Withdean Stadium and a limited budget, it proved a difficult season for the club on the pitch.

The 23 league programmes told the story of a disappointing losing run – twelve league games in a row – followed by the appointment of Steve Coppell as manager.

Bobby Zamora brought his first spell at the club to an end with 14 goals, but injuries at crucial times meant Albion didn’t quite get over the line, as they drew with Grimsby Town on the final day to drop into the third tier.

Seven of Albion’s 11 victories came at the Withdean Stadium — including a memorable 4-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, and a 4-0 win against Watford, which set up a tense final day at Blundell Park.
