Albion Appoint Deputy Chairman

19 November 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion chief executive Paul Barber has been appointed as the club’s deputy chairman, the decision was approved unanimously by the club’s directors at today’s board meeting and he will take on the new combined role with immediate effect.

Chairman Tony Bloom said, “During his six and a half years as the club’s chief executive, Paul has overseen a sustained period of growth for the Albion, on and off the pitch.

“In recognition of the way the club is growing and developing, the board has decided that in addition to his current responsibilities as our chief executive, Paul will become deputy chairman of the club. It is a promotion that is well deserved.

“Paul has declined recent opportunities to pursue roles at bigger clubs, preferring instead to invest his energies and considerable football experience to help establish our club in the Premier League. The club’s board and I am delighted he has chosen this option.”

Barber joined Albion as chief executive in June 2012. He was named Overall CEO of the Year for England and Scotland, as well as Championship CEO of the Year, at the Football Industry Awards 2013, and won the Sports Executive of the Year at the 2016 International Stadium Business Awards in Madrid.

Having overseen the club’s participation in three EFL Championship play-offs during his first four seasons at the club, the club eventually achieved automatic promotion to the Premier League in 2017 and subsequently finished 15th in its first season back in the top flight.

Barber’s career in professional football has spanned more than 20 years, during which time he has held senior positions at Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC, and The Football Association.

Since joining Albion, Barber has been elected to various representative roles for the Premier League, The EFL, and The FA. He is currently a member of The FA Council and also serves as one of The FA’s international ambassadors. Last week, Barber was appointed to the Professional Game Board as a Premier League representative, replacing outgoing Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis who is joining AC Milan.
