ALBION AND BRIGHTON UNIVERSITY SHORTLISTED FOR MEDIA AWARD

7 November 2018

Albion's partnership with University of Brighton has been shortlisted for Innovation of the Year.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s partnership with the University of Brighton’s BA Sport Journalism course has been shortlisted for ‘Innovation of the Year’ in the National Council Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Awards for Excellence.

Since the start of the 2017/18 season, six third-year students have assisted Albion’s media team on matchdays, and have also provided coverage of the club’s under-23s and women’s team matches.

The relationship between the club and university has gone from strength to strength, with the University of Brighton becoming the club’s official higher education partner in September 2018.

Albion’s head of media & communications Paul Camillin said, “This is excellent news for both the football club and the university, and I’m delighted that our partnership has been recognised in this way.

“All of the students that have worked with us have gained an invaluable amount of experience, and many have gone onto gain full-time jobs within the media industry.

“I am very much looking forward to seeing how our working relationship develops in the years to come.”

Sport Journalism BA(Hons) course leader Owen Evans added, “Reporting from a Premier League press box is beyond the reach of many professional sport journalists, so the fact that our students get the opportunity before they graduate – while being paid for the privilege – is something we’re very proud of.

“The NCTJ sets the standard for our industry, so it’s encouraging to see them recognise our unique approach to working alongside the biggest names in the field.”

Highbury College and News Associates Manchester have also been shortlisted for the award, which is now in its second year.

After receiving a record-breaking amount of entries, 52 students, trainees, apprentices, journalists and course providers were shortlisted in the NCTJ Awards for Excellence 2018.

The winners will be announced at the gala dinner and ceremony on Thursday, 29th November.
