League Winner Walton Wins Golden Glove Award

By Kieran Cleeves • 07 May 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Christian Walton had a weekend to cherish, as the 22-year-old picked up the Sky Bet League One Golden Glove award, as well as securing the league title with Wigan Athletic on Saturday evening.

The shot-stopper kept his 19th clean sheet of the season as the Latics won 1-0 at Doncaster Rovers to pip Blackburn Rovers to the League One trophy after 46 games of the season.

Walton kept two more clean sheets than closest rival David Raya of Blackburn, despite playing 14 less games than his opposing number - meaning the goalkeeper kept an outstanding 19 shutouts in 31 matches.

Wigan’s narrow victory - thanks to another goal from Will Grigg - also ensured Walton would finish the season with a League One winners’ medal around his neck, as the Latics sat two appoints above their north-west neighbours.

The Albion loanee expressed his delight after finishing a memorable season at the DW Stadium, as he came back from injury to help the Latics win promotion to the Sky Bet Championship.

“It has been an incredible season. It’s been a massive collective effort but to get the Golden Glove is a proud moment.

“To get the injury early in the campaign was disappointing but Jamie Jones was incredible in my absence and has pushed me all season to look after the number one shirt.

“I’d also like to add special praise to Nick Colgan, our goalkeeping coach, who has been superb all season and this award is as much for him as it is for me.”
