Relive Albion’s First Season At The Amex

By Kieran Cleeves • 26 March 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion supporters can now relive the club’s first season at the Amex Stadium on Seagulls TV, as Gus Poyet’s team made the step up to Championship level and opened the campaign in dramatic style.

The Seagulls TV production, which lasts for over 100 minutes, takes a match-by-match look at Albion’s 2011/12 season, and includes match footage, audio commentary and interviews with a number of familiar faces.

Starting with Will Buckley’s emotion-charged double against Doncaster Rovers on both his and the Amex’s league debut, the special feature then tells the story of how Poyet’s men fared throughout the club’s first season back in England’s second tier.

Albion found themselves top of the league table after an impressive start to the season, but a difficult run leading into November saw the Seagulls place their feet back on the ground and understand the difficulty of the Championship.

A hat-trick of wins restored a good feeling amongst Poyet’s players and the club’s supporters, but four successive defeats followed, as Albion’s inconsistency began to show, despite faring reasonably well for Championship newcomers.

Albion’s FA Cup run, which included an impressive 1-0 victory over Premier League side Newcastle United, was halted in emphatic fashion against Liverpool, but the club’s supporters travelled in their numbers to watch the game at Anfield.

Fans’ favourite Vicente bagged a brace to lead Albion to a 2-0 victory over Portsmouth at the Amex in March, before another 2-0 success later that month against Derby County, but Poyet’s team were unable to claim victory in their final eight matches of the season.

However, despite an underwhelming end to the campaign, the Seagulls finished in tenth position, with 12 of their 17 league victories coming at the Amex - a good sign that the club’s new home would be a happy hunting ground for years to come.
