Walton Re-joins Wigan On Loan

By James Hilsum • 22 June 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Christian Walton has re-joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan deal.

The 22-year-old returns to the Latics on a contract that runs until 30th June 2019 (with a recall option in January next year) after a very successful loan spell last season, when Walton made a total of 35 appearances across all competitions in Wigan’s League One title-winning campaign.

Manager Chris Hughton said, “This loan move is one which benefits both clubs and the player. It allows Christian to return to a club he knows well, and he will be able to gain regular game time in a very competitive Championship division.

“Christian played a huge part in helping Wigan to achieve promotion - an experience which will stand him in a good stead at an early stage in his career.

“Once Wigan confirmed their interest in re-signing Christian on loan again, we felt it was the most logical step for his continued development.”

It will be Walton's sixth loan move since joining the club - after last season’s move to Wigan, the temporary switches to Luton Town and Southend United in 2016/17, and to Bury and Plymouth Argyle the season before.

The goalkeeper joined Albion from Plymouth in 2013, and has made four senior appearances for the club. He has also represented England at under-19, under-20 and under-21 level.
