Izquierdo Named In Colombia's World Cup Squad

By Kieran Cleeves • 04 June 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion winger Jose Izquierdo has been confirmed in Colombia’s 23-man squad that travels to this summer’s 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Izquierdo has made three substitute appearances for his nation over recent months, and Colombia manager Jose Pekerman has rewarded the 25-year-old with a seat on the plane to Russia.

Colombia will open their World Cup campaign against Japan, before playing Poland and Senegal, as they go in search of reaching the knockout stages of the competition.

Izquierdo’s inclusion means three Albion players will be present at the World Cup, with Mathew Ryan representing Australia and summer signing Leon Balogun lining up for Nigeria.

All three players and their nations have been drawn in different groups, but Ryan and Balogun could meet as early as the last 16 of the competition, while Izquierdo could only meet one of his team-mates in either the semi-final or final.

It will be Ryan's second World Cup after playing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, while Izquierdo and Balogun will be making their first trip to the prestigious international tournament.
