Buet's Praise For Portugal Trip

Brighton & Hove Albion captain Danielle Buet highlighted the importance of this week’s pre-season training camp in Portugal, as the side prepares for life in the revamped FA Women’s Super League.

Buet and her team-mates took part in a vigorous training session close to their hotel on the outskirts of Porto, and the skipper says the hard work is just beginning as they bid to establish themselves in the top tier.

She said, “It felt good to be back on the ball and it was like our first day back at school! It was very hard, but enjoyable, and I’m sure we’ll see the benefits.

“This time is massive for us as a team so that we can all work together. I’ve never had this experience before, which is fantastic and shows a lot about the ambition of the club and the way it wants to support the women’s team.

“We’re all working together for the same cause ahead of what is going to be a tough season, but we’ll all come away from this experience feeling stronger.”

The midfielder praised the continuous support that the club has shown the women’s and girls’ programme and says it is up to the players to repay that faith.

“Every single one of us knows what the club is doing for us, and they proved it last season.

“They were behind us for the whole season and put in a great bid for Tier One status, which we achieved.

“We know as players that it’s our responsibility to maintain that and not be happy with where we are now. We want to be among the best sides in the country, and weeks like this will be so beneficial in helping us to achieve this long-term goal.”

Buet spoke about the prospect of being the club’s first captain in the top tier of women’s football, but insisted that everyone in the squad needs to show their leadership qualities too.

“I’ve played the odd game as captain at other clubs, but to continue leading this group of girls would be a great honour for me.

“I haven’t been at this club for a long time, but I know what it means to wear the badge.

“But we’ve got some really good leaders in the side and the important thing is that we work and respect each other. We definitely have those qualities as a team.”
