Powell: It Rounds The Year Off Nicely

By Jake Ketley • 12 December 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion women’s first-team manager Hope Powell was happy to end 2018 on a high following a 4-1 victory over Yeovil Town that secured a place in the FA Continental Tyres Cup quarter-finals.

A goal each from Ellie Brazil, Dani Buet, Kayleigh Green and Beth Roe secured a convincing victory, and Powell was delighted to see the goals being spread out amongst the squad.

Whilst Albion ran out convincing winners, Powell praised Yeovil for their resilient display.

She said, “Credit to Yeovil, I think they made it difficult at times with their style of play. First half they really put us on the back foot and we had to chase quite a lot.

“I must credit my team as well though, we lost our way a little bit at times, but we tried to stick to the game plan and at times we did it well in quite difficult conditions.

“We managed to score four goals from four different players. It’s good for Kayleigh [Green] to score and gives her confidence, and I’m especially pleased for Beth Roe, she’s been out for a while and to score with her second touch was good and the bench were delighted for her too.

“It rounds the year off nicely and we’re really pleased.”

Powell was also delighted to have secured qualification to the next phase of the competition and admitted she was looking forward to the upcoming winder break.

“It’s good to qualify and gives us another opportunity to play. It was nice to give players that haven’t had a lot of minutes the opportunity to play. They all did well and four goals against Yeovil is good for us.

“It’s been a tough season so far, but I’ve been pleased with the way the players have applied themselves.

“It’s a steep learning curve for this club. For a lot of them it’s their first time playing in the FA Women’s Super League and the level is far higher than many of these players have experienced.

“It’s important that players have a winter break. It gives them the chance to have some time off and allows then to settle, have a bit of recovery and come back in 2019, which will be a very big year for this club.”
