The University of Brighton has won an NCTJ Innovation of the Year award.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s partnership with the University of Brighton’s BA Sport Journalism course has won the Innovation of the Year award at the National Council Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Awards for Excellence.

The award was presented during a gala ceremony at Quendon Hall in Essex.

The scheme won the prize ahead of innovations from Highbury College and News Associates Manchester.

BA Sport Journalism course leader Owen Evans, said, “It’s a fantastic achievement for the University of Brighton to win its first-ever NCTJ award.

“It underlines the unique opportunities we offer trainee sports reporters at the University of Brighton.

“This is the result of an excellent relationship with Brighton and Hove Albion FC’s communications team. Over 18 months we worked towards creating the apprenticeship, and we have already seen huge benefits with many of our students already finding work in the industry.”

Since the start of the 2017/18 season, six third-year students have assisted Albion’s media team on matchdays, and have also provided coverage of the club’s under-23s and women’s team matches.

The relationship between the club and university has gone from strength to strength, with the University of Brighton becoming the club’s official higher education partner in September 2018.

After receiving a record-breaking number of entries, 52 students, trainees, apprentices, journalists and course providers were shortlisted in the NCTJ Awards for Excellence 2018.
