Loan Round-up: Walton Edges Towards Promotion

By Kieran Cleeves • 18 April 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Christian Walton was involved twice for Wigan Athletic over the past week, as the Latics picked up four points to move closer to Sky Bet League One promotion.

The 22-year-old came face to face with fellow Albion loanee Richie Towell at the DW Stadium on Saturday afternoon, and the spoils were shared with Rotherham United, who are close to securing a play-off spot.

The match ended goalless between the promotion chasers, to secure Walton’s 16th clean sheet in the league this season, which was bettered a few days later when Oxford United travelled north.

Will Grigg struck an 87th-minute winner to move the Latics eight points clear of third-placed Shrewsbury Town - taking Walton's tally to 17 clean sheets in 27 games.

Towell also played his second game in the space of four days at the Priestfield Stadium - and the Millers recorded a 1-0 victory to strengthen their chances of finishing in the play-offs.

Ben White played 90 minutes in Newport County’s 2-1 victory over Swindon Town at Rodney Parade - and the 20-year-old laid on the assist for the Exiles’ second goal.

Ben Hall, Rohan Ince and Oliver Norwood were all used as late substitutes in their respective matches, with Notts County claiming a 3-1 win over Colchester United, Bury drawing 3-3 at Doncaster Rovers and Fulham sharing a 1-1 draw against Brentford.

Soufyan Ahannach had a disappointing afternoon in Holland as Sparta Rotterdam lost 7-0 to Vitesse Arnhem, while Bailey Vose found himself on the losing team as Whitehawk claimed a 2-1 win over Welling United.

And finally, Reece Meekums continued his good form for Worthing and helped the Sussex side to a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Needham Market at the Bibby Financial Services Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
