Hughton: We Allowed Them To Build Momentum

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton admitted Huddersfield Town’s style of play was hard to deal with at the Amex Stadium, but felt his players needed to capitalise on their best moments in the game.

The visitors enjoyed more of the possession in Saturday’s 1-1 draw on the south coast, but for all their time on the ball, Hughton highlighted the Terriers’ lack of opportunities.

He said, “With the way that they play, dropping two midfield players very deep, it’s very difficult to press every area of the pitch.
 
“But what you have to do, when you have some joy, is make the most of it and capitalise. However, we gifted them a goal and that gave them a lift.

"For all of Huddersfield’s play, they never really had a clear chance in 90-odd minutes. Whereas we had two one-on-ones with the goalkeeper.”

“We were up against a Huddersfield team that might have been struggling to score goals, but are a good enough side on the ball to get a bit of momentum - and the goal allowed them to do that.”

Steve Mounie intercepted Shane Duffy’s pass to Mathew Ryan soon after Jonas Lossl's own goal, and Hughton accepted it was a rare mistake from the Irishman.

"When you've got a player who’s been as good as he has been this season, he was the first one to hold his hands up.
 
"He's made a mistake and you just hope a mistake in that position doesn't lead to a goal. But unfortunately for us, it did.”

Albion have six matches remaining to secure their Premier League status for next season, and Hughton believes there will be some surprise results between now and the end of the campaign.

"It's still the same group of teams and there are still six games to go. That means there are many points to play for.
 
"Someone is going to pull out good results that you don't expect. Which teams will do that? I don't know. But we certainly still need points to make sure we stay up."
