- Albion claim first three points in the Premier League Cup
- Danny Cashman scores a hat-trick on Tyneside
- Oisin McEntee and Thomas Cole reply for the hosts
- Ryan Longman provides all three assists for the Seagulls
Brighton & Hove Albion under-18s opened their Premier League Cup account with all three points, thanks to Danny Cashman’s hat-trick that secured a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United away.
Ian Buckman’s team continued their unbeaten start to the season, and Cashman’s contribution was vital, as the Magpies ran out of time despite a late flurry of chances at Whitley Park.
The 16-year-old broke the deadlock after just four minutes, when Ryan Longman’s low cross found the striker inside the penalty area, before he stroked home with a composed finish.
Longman was the provider again moments later, when he slipped a pass through for Tyrese Fornah, who could only direct his shot straight at Magpies goalkeeper Nathan Harker.
But the Seagulls doubled their lead on 27 minutes, and it was the Longman-Cashman combination again that proved beneficial, as the latter beat Harker from six yards, after the shot-stopper gave away the ball.
The deficit was halved on 33 minutes when Oisin McEntee rolled the ball past George Bentley from close range, following Adam Wilson’s corner that Albion failed to clear.
Columbus Ibeh saw his shot deflected onto the crossbar shortly after half-time, before Elias Sorensen almost levelled the game, with his shot being cleared off the line.
Albion restored their two-goal advantage though, and once again it was Longman who provided the assist for Cashman in the 68th minute, as he headed Fornah’s cross into the path of the striker, who dispatched for his hat-trick.
Isaac Hutchinson almost made it four in the closing stages, as he struck the inside of the post before firing straight at Harker, following good work from Fornah in the attacking third.
The Magpies pulled a goal back with just three minutes remaining, as Thomas Cole slotted home from Sorensen’s rebounded effort, but the Seagulls held on to claim maximum points on Tyneside.
