Shane Duffy celebrates at the final whistle on Monday.

Brighton & Hove Albion defender Shane Duffy was celebrating last night, as the Republic of Ireland secured a place in the World Cup play-offs with a tense 1-0 victory over Wales.
The centre-back was named man of the match with a towering performance in defence to withhold a late Welsh onslaught, after James McClean scored the only goal of the game.
Duffy could even have got his name onto the scoresheet with a shot that went across the face of goal in the first half.
Martin O’Neill’s men will find out their play-off opponents when the draw is made in Zurich next Tuesday at 2pm.
Elsewhere last night, Tomer Hemed played the full 90 minutes for Israel in a 1-0 defeat to Spain.
Albion goalkeeper Mathew Ryan will be hoping to keep his World Cup dream alive today when the Socceroos play Syria in a play-off second leg tie in Sydney.
The winners will progress to another two-legged play-off against a CONCACAF side next month.
