Brighton & Hove Albion striker Ini Umotong praised her team-mates for generating a strong team spirit this season, and for also understanding the importance of remaining focused, ahead of their FA Women’s Super League 2 clash with Sheffield FC Ladies today, kick-off 1pm.

The Seagulls return to Culver Road after two games in the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup, and Umotong, who joined the club from Oxford this summer, has been delighted with the together of Albion’s playing squad.

She said, “The team are great and we have a good dynamic on and off the field. It’s a great place to play.

“I’ve always been quite lucky to be at clubs where there’s been good team spirit, but Brighton is definitely up a level in terms of that.

“Everyone is on the same page, having a laugh and a joke, but at the same time we know there’s a job to do and we’re able to focus on that.”

Umotong also revealed her satisfaction at playing under the guidance of Hope Powell this season, and praised the former England manager for her knowledge and experience within the game.

“It’s been great. It’s always good to have world-class coaching and we’ve all learned so much from her already.

“It’s really comforting to know that we’ve got her on our side. Her expertise is definitely showing.

“She’s very much about doing the basics excellently and she drills that into us constantly.

“That is showing in our performances already, and from that we’ll be looking to build on those performances even further going forward.”

Albion will be looking to return to winning ways in the league after drawing 2-2 with Oxford last time out, and Umotong believes the team are riding a wave of confidence after their last outing in the cup.

“Each game that we play, we learn something new. From that, we get better and set the standards a little bit higher each time we play.

“It’s up to us to match that standard and push it further, and I think we did that going from Chelsea to Spurs. We learned a lot defensively and only conceded one goal.

“We’re all quite optimistic and confident. Coming off a 4-1 win on Sunday, our confidence is very high.”
