Brighton & Hove Albion women’s first-team manager Hope Powell encouraged her side to take their defensive resoluteness into today’s FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur, kick-off 2pm.
Albion head into the group stage match after receiving plenty of plaudits for a solid display against a star-studded Chelsea side on Wednesday night, and Powell is looking for more of the same this afternoon.
She said, “There are lots of positives to draw from it [Wednesday’s game].
“One of the things we learned is that we can defend. We’ve conceded far too many goals in the league, and it is energy sapping if you’re constantly chasing the game.
“The Chelsea game shows me they can defend and it’s just about having that final bit of quality.
“We need to show that same sort of resilience and defence on Sunday, and I’m sure we’ll get a few more opportunities to attack this time.
“The Chelsea game was our biggest test so far, and hopefully we can carry some momentum going into Sunday.”
Powell also placed value on the competition as a whole, and views it as a good opportunity to rotate the squad.
“The Continental Cup certainly gives you an opportunity to have a look at additional players. Is it important? Every game is important – for their development more so than winning the Continental Cup.”
“But the players should head into Sunday feeling very proud. It’s a really good lesson for us to indicate where we are and where we need to be.”
