Micky Adams celebrates with his team at the Withdean Stadium.

Ahead of Friday’s Q&A event at the Amex, former Brighton & Hove Albion manager Micky Adams commented on how the club’s championship-winning team of 2000/01 embraced playing at the Withdean Stadium, despite its unconventional appearance.

Adams will be speaking alongside former assistant manager Bob Booker, who he brought to the club midway through that memorable campaign, and reflected on Albion’s first promotion at their home of 12 seasons.

He said, “My first spell at the club couldn’t have worked out any better really. I joined when they were playing games at Gillingham, so when you see where they are now, it’s an unbelievable rise.

“At the time you think you’re invincible. The promotion was as good as any I’ve had. I’ve been lucky to have four in my career, but that was the only Championship I ever won.

“All the excuses were there. It’s a bit like West Ham, people are saying they couldn’t settle into their new stadium. From a footballer’s perspective, you can use as many excuses as you want to fail, but we never did that.

“We embraced it [Withdean Stadium], and it had its own unique atmosphere. Winning that league title was certainly one of the most eye-opening achievements of my career.”

Adams understands the struggle Albion had in securing permission to build a new stadium, and he praised the determination shown by all those involved in making the club’s current home, the Amex Stadium, a reality.

“All the people behind the scenes deserve credit for keeping the football club alive.

“The supporters also kept it alive. There were a hardcore of supporters that really kept the club going. There wasn't the 25,000 plus you get now.

“I remember the days of the marches along the seafront, where they demanded a new stadium. Every Brighton fan has played their part somewhere down the line.”
