Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-18s were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland in their penultimate game of the season at the Academy of Light on Saturday.

Jack Diamond scored the winning goal early on for the Black Cats, as Ian Buckman’s side were unable to find their own breakthrough in the North East.

Buckman made four changes to the starting line-up that drew 1-1 against Leicester City, with under-23 goalkeeper Billy Collings making an appearance, alongside Danny Mandroiu, Rian O’Sullivan and Cameron Tutt.

Albion created the first opportunity of the game inside the opening five minutes, as David Ajiboye outpaced his marker and cut the ball back for Mandroiu, however the attacking midfielder had his firm shot saved.

But after just nine minutes, the Black Cats took the lead and it was Diamond who twisted and turned on the edge of Albion’s penalty area, before firing a low shot into the bottom corner to open the scoring.

Mandroiu looked to hit back with a quick response, but Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson dived to his left-hand side to save the Irishman’s well-executed free kick.

Diamond came close to grabbing a second goal when his header struck the crossbar from Owen Gamble’s cross, before Chris Allen’s long-range shot dropped wide of the target before the break.

Patterson raced off his line to save at the feet of Danny Cashman after the re-start, but the goalkeeper’s clearance struck the Albion forward and the rebound fell narrowly wide of the target.

Collings was forced into making an important save to prevent Sonny Best from doubling the lead, as he denied the Sunderland man after he cut in off the wing and drilled a shot towards goal.

Isaac Hutchinson had an effort blocked in the closing stages, after Ajiboye crossed for the midfielder, and Tyrese Fornah’s follow-up shot dropped wide, as the Seagulls were beaten in their last away game of the season.
