- The Seagulls travel to Reading on Saturday
Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-18s were beaten 2-0 by Southampton at the Hampshire Club’s Staplewood Campus on Wednesday.
Goals either side of half time from Javen Siu and Tyreke Johnson sealed all three points for the Saints, as the Seagulls lost their second successive game after winning 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspur.
Neither side were able to create a clear opening inside the opening stages, but the hosts took the lead in the 22nd minute through Siu’s spectacular effort, as he shifted the ball across his body and found the top corner from just outside the box.
Albion responded well and came close to levelling the scores, but Aaron Connolly’s fierce strike after surging into Southampton’s penalty area could only find the side-netting.
Shortly before halftime, Siph Mdlalose took advantage of a stray pass along the backline and lobbed Albion goalkeeper Tom McGill, but the midfielder’s looping effort dropped inches over the crossbar.

Southampton extended their lead after the break when substitute Johnson swung a dangerous cross into the penalty area, and with Albion’s defenders unable to make contact, the winger’s cross sailed directly into the far corner of McGill’s goal.
Danny Mandroiu had a fine chance to halve the deficit with ten minutes remaining, but the Irishman’s low effort from Owen Moore’s precise through-ball was saved well by Saints shot-stopper Alex Cull.
Mdlalose came close to notching a third goal for the Saints in the closing stages, but his firm effort was unable to sneak inside McGill’s near post from a tight angle, as the hosts secured a 2-0 win.
