  • Albion’s under-23s lose 2-0 at Villa Park tonight
  • Jerrell Sellars opens the scoring for the hosts early on
  • Kienan Davis doubles Villa's lead moments after opening goal

  • Christian Walton named in the starting line-up

Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-23 were beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa this evening, as they were unable to recover from conceding two early goals at Villa Park.

Goals from Jerrell Sellars and Kienan Davis proved the difference, and despite an improved second-half performance from Albion, the hosts saw out the game and took all three points.

Christian Walton and Sam Adekugbe were both included in the starting line-up, while Tyler Hornby-Forbes also featured after having his red card in last week's game with Middlesbrough overturned.

Albion were made to pay for a slow start in their last league away game at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and they made the same mistake again inside the opening six minutes.

Villa forward Davis broke into the penalty area and delivered a low cross for his strike partner Sellars after just five minutes, and the latter stroked home to give the hosts an early lead.

Less than a minute later, Davis picked up the ball and surged towards the edge of Albion’s penalty area, and with Walton unable to reach the striker’s stinging effort into the bottom corner, the Seagulls found themselves 2-0 down.

Adekugbe was forced off with an injury after just ten minutes, with George Cox coming on to replace the full-back, before Davis and Sellars continued to threat and both went close to extending the lead.

Walton produced a fine one-handed save at full stretch to deny Sellars a second goal, after the striker drilled a powerful effort towards goal from Davis’ clever lay-off.

LATEST NEWS FROM SEAGULLS.CO.UK

The Seagulls made a better start to the second half as they played with more intensity, but Jayson Molumby’s low-driven effort zipped narrowly wide after great link-up play from James Tilley and Wright.

Dessie Hutchinson had a fine chance to halve the deficit after racing onto a pass inside from Hornby-Forbes, but the midfielder lifted his shot over the crossbar from just inside the box.

Ben Hall was on hand with a last-ditch block to deny substitute Callum O’Hare from adding a third from close range, before Walton parried a powerful shot from Sellars behind for a corner.

Cox brilliantly found Tilley at the back post with a fine delivery from the left wing, but Daniel Mandroiu’s header from the striker’s cut-back dropped wide of the target.

Villa goalkeeper Viktor Johansson comfortably gathered the ball low down after Tilley cut inside and fired a left-footed strike on target, before Hutchinson headed over from Tilley’s corner.

Despite the late flurry of chances, Albion were unable to find the back of the net and Villa claimed a clean sheet and maximum points.
