Jake Forster-Caskey and Craig Mackail-Smith celebrate against Southampton.

After a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Southampton earlier in the season, Brighton & Hove Albion welcomed the Saints to the Amex in the reverse fixture in 2012 - and the Seagulls made amends with an impressive 3-0 victory of their own.

Albion pipped their south coast rivals to the League One title the previous season, but Gus Poyet’s side were convincingly beaten when they travelled to St Mary’s in November - when a Rickie Lambert hat-trick made the difference.

The Saints forward made the headlines again when the teams met in January, but this time it was for all the wrong reasons, as he received a red card in the 51st minute, leaving the Seagulls with a numerical advantage for the remainder of the game.

Jake Forster-Caskey - making his first league start - broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, after Saints goalkeeper Kelvin Davis parried Kazenga LuaLua’s stinging shot into the path of the young midfielder, who slotted the ball home.

Matt Sparrow doubled Albion’s advantage ten minutes later, and it was a sensational 35-yard strike that made it 2-0, as the midfielder found the top corner to send the Amex faithful into raptures.

Another fine effort from Sparrow extended Albion’s lead in the 86th minute, before Gordon Greer was red carded for an off-the-ball incident a minute later.

Although Southampton went on to reach the Premier League that season, while Albion finished up in tenth position, parity was restored between the sides on the pitch - and now, in 2017, a Premier League meeting awaits.
