ALBION’S SPANISH ENCOUNTERS AT THE AMEX

Brighton & Hove Albion’s pre-season friendly against Atletico de Madrid will be their third meeting with La Liga opposition at the Amex in recent years.

The Seagulls welcomed Villarreal to the south coast in 2013, before Sevilla - who won the Europa League in 2014, 2015 and 2016 - came to the Amex at the beginning of Chris Hughton’s first full season in charge.

Villarreal had recently been promoted to Spain’s top division when they travelled to England, and they proved too much for Albion - who were led by new manager Oscar Garcia, following Gus Poyet’s departure.

Despite making a lightning-quick start to the game, with Ashley Barnes volleying the opening goal inside the first two minutes, Albion were undone by Cani’s deflected effort before the break.

The visitors showed their class in the second half and put the game beyond Albion’s reach with two quick-fire goals within six minutes to make it 3-1, which is how it finished.

Two years later, after Garcia’s departure, Sami Hyypia’s short stay and Hughton’s arrival, the Seagulls welcomed Sevilla to the Amex, following a busy summer of recruitment.

New signings Tomer Hemed and Gaetan Bong lined up for the Seagulls, while Liam Rosenior appeared off the bench for his first appearance at the Amex.

It was Hemed who won a penalty for the Seagulls in the 17th minute, and the Israel international stepped up to open his Amex account.

Hughton’s team held on for a narrow 1-0 victory against the Europa League winners at the time, which proved a perfect platform to build on, as the Seagulls mounted an impressive promotion challenge.

Albion’s next Spanish test is against Diego Simeone’s Atletico de Madrid side, who visit the Amex on Sunday 6th August, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Fernando Torres and Koke coming up against Hughton’s Premier League newcomers.
