Brighton & Hove Albion had one final game to clinch the Sky Bet Championship title, but Jack Grealish’s 89th-minute strike snatched the trophy out of their hands, as the Seagulls drew 1-1 with Aston Villa on the final day of the season.
Chris Hughton’s team looked to be heading for a first-placed finish after Glenn Murray converted from the penalty spot at Villa Park, however with Newcastle United winning 3-0 against Barnsley at St James’ Park, Grealish delivered a cruel blow and the Magpies finished the season as champions.
Albion’s disappointment was clear to see, but their magnificent achievement of reaching the Premier League for the first time in the club’s history was not forgotten. Hughton’s team were applauded off the field by both sets of supporters, as the season came to a close at Villa Park on Sunday 7th May.
Just two days later, influential midfielder Dale Stephens signed a new four-year deal with the club, which lifted the mood ahead of Albion’s promotion parade, where thousands of supporters turned out to thank the club’s promotion-winning heroes for their outstanding achievement of reaching England’s top flight.
Albion’s players enjoyed an open-top bus ride along Brighton seafront before taking to a stage on Hove Lawns, on a beautiful day in the city. Player by player, Albion’s promotion-winning squad was presented with their medals, before club captain Bruno lifted the trophy to celebrate reaching the Premier League.
The club's 2017/18 Premier League home shirt was also revealed on stage by EFL Championship Player of the Season - Anthony Knockaert.
The Seagulls made their first new signing of the summer before the month was over, as German midfielder Pascal Gross made the switch from Bundesliga side FC Ingolstadt 04.
