Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-18s had to settle for a share of the spoils, as West Ham United wiped out a 2-0 deficit to claim a point at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre today.

Goals from Isaac Hutchinson and Luis Garcia put Albion in a commanding position, but Jahmal Hector-Ingram’s strike and Joe Powell’s penalty ensured the match ended all square.

The Hammers created the first chance of the game when Hector-Ingram slid his
close-range effort wide following an in-swinging ball into the box.

Albion had an opportunity to break the deadlock when Garcia’s swerving free-kick caught the wind, but West Ham keeper Rihards Matrevics made a comfortable save.

Dan Kemp came forward for the visitors and almost forced an own goal when Alex Cochrane diverted his cross narrowly over the target.

Albion broke the deadlock on 27 minutes when Cochrane's shot forced a fine reaction save from Matrevics, but Hutchinson was on hand to fire home the rebound.

The Seagulls doubled their advantage ten minutes later through Garcia, who provided a cool finish at the far post following some good link-up play involving Tyrese Fornah and Stefan Ljubicic.

Hector-Ingram was the most threatening player for the Hammers during the first half, and he saw a towering header saved by Albion keeper Thomas McGill.

But the West Ham forward got his name on the scoresheet in first-half stoppage time with a clinical finish inside the box from Kemp’s cross from the right-hand side.

Powell could have brought the Hammers level in emphatic fashion just a few minutes after the re-start, but his overhead kick was cleared off the line.

Powell then tested the Albion defence again, this time with a set-piece, but McGill made a comfortable stop.

West Ham levelled in the 73rd minute when Vashon Neufville was brought down inside the box, and Powell clinically fired the subsequent spot-kick.

They could even have stole all three points in injury time, but Bernado Rosa saw his shot deflect narrowly over the bar, while McGill saved the resulting corner.

ALBION: McGill; Morrison (Shihab 79), O'Sullivan, Moore, Cochrane; Hutchinson, Fornah, Ferguson; Ljubicic (Mandroiu 67), Cashman, Garcia (Connolly 79).

SUBS NOT USED: Bentley (GK), Rolph.
