RAFFERTY AWARE OF OXFORD THREAT

26 February 2017

The defender knows the Oxford team well from her brief spell at the club.

Brighton & Hove Albion defender Laura Rafferty is looking forward to making her home debut against one of her former clubs, as Oxford United visit Culver Road in an FAWSL Spring Series fixture this afternoon, kick-off 2pm.

The 20-year-old spent a short period with the U’s last year while at Chelsea, and is more aware than most of the quality which Andrew Cook’s side possess.

She said: “I went on loan to Oxford last year, and the girls are great there.

“It will be a good test for us and I know a few of the girls personally, including Imi Umotong, who’s unreal up front. She’s amazing on and off the pitch and holds the ball up very well.

“They have a good back line too, with the likes of Rosie Lane and Lauren Haynes. They are quite a physical team, but they’re all great girls.

“Obviously I won’t be thinking about that once I step out onto the pitch. I’ve got so much faith in this team and I’m sure we can do ourselves proud.”

Rafferty was speaking at the club’s player signing session at the Amex on Tuesday and expressed her delight at the amount of support shown for the women’s team.

“The signing event was brilliant and there were a lot more fans than I expected. The amount of interest they showed in the women’s game was surprising.

“It is good to do stuff away from the pitch, and it is a nice and show the fans the connection we’ve got as a squad.

“It was a great experience for all of us and hopefully it will bring us together even more.”

The midfielder will fly out to Croatia tomorrow to link up with the Northern Ireland squad for the Istria Cup, and is relishing the prospect of facing Slovakia, Chinese Taipei and Slovenia in the competition.

“I will be going away to Croatia, so hopefully I will go out there after playing another 90 minutes and getting a win too.

“I am so excited, I get on really well with the girls and I’ll be away for two weeks with the squad. It will be great to get all the girls back together out there, and to gain some more international experience.”
