HUGHTON ON: READING

24 February 2017

The key talking points from the manager's pre-match press conference.

At his pre-match press conference, Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton spoke about the level playing field ahead of Saturday’s game against the Royals, analysed the job manager Jaap Stam has done at the Madejski Stadium, the need to build on Saturday's win, and expressed his desire to seal promotion to the Premier League.

Balanced game: “Whatever our results are going into the game, and whatever theirs are, there will be one team that does better on the day, and hopefully that’s us.

“Ultimately it’s about three points, but it does add more meaning to the game, and it would certainly give us an advantage if we were to win.”

Stam’s Reading impact: “I’ve been hugely impressed with the manager and the work that he’s done this season. They play a style of football which is very expansive.

“From the start of the season, where there may have been some frustrations with that, he’s built a philosophy that’s got stronger and stronger as the season’s gone on.

“Absolute credit to the manager, but they’ve also got very good players. Sometimes when you’re embarking on a new system, particularly an expansive one, you’ve got to have good players to get the results that you want."

Switching focus after victory: “As soon as you get through that weekend, it’s very much onto the next game. With our standards, we went through a difficult period, particularly away from home.

“So at the time, it felt like a big win [v Barnsley], and certainly at the moment, they all do. But come Monday morning, we were very focused on our next game against Reading.

“Every time that we play a game that we feel is a big game, we look at the fixture list for the other teams and their games are equally as tough.

“It will be like this until the end of the season, lots of ups and down, lots of fixtures for all of us, but it will be the teams that come out of that best, that will have the best chance."

Focused on promotion: “Our aim going into this season was to, in whatever way, endeavour to get promotion.

“If you said to me now, and it would be no different for any other manager, that you can guarantee  promotion, I’d accept it in whichever way that was.

“You have to go about your business in the right way, try to win as many games as you can and put yourself in the best-possible position."
