At his pre-match press conference, Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton delivered a team news update, spoke about returning to St James' Park, assessed the threat posed by Newcastle United and looked ahead to the January transfer window.
“There is good competition in our squad at the moment, and we will need that over these games.”
RETURNING TO NEWCASTLE
“It was the club that gave me my first opportunity to manage and that’s something I’m always very grateful for. I’ve been back there a couple of occasions since; it’s always enjoyable to go back, but mostly you want to go back and play well enough to get a result.
“It's still a difficult place to go, a wonderful stadium, and full of fans who want to get behind their team. Whatever problems they have had, they always get through it and that makes them very tough opposition.”
THREAT FROM NEWCASTLE
“Newcastle are a team that we know very well, having already played them once this season, and twice last season.
“We know they have a lot of quality, and even though they haven’t had the best of times of late, we know they can be a fairly formidable team on a good day.
“They showed that earlier in the season and have enough quality to make them very dangerous opponents.”
JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW
“We have an obligation to finish January with best squad we can. We've fared fairly well this season; we probably surprised ourselves a little bit with a very good period and then had a more difficult period. The Watford game probably alleviated any nerves.
“Anything we do will be minimal. The striker one has been mentioned more because of the summer, most people are aware we tried to bring one in during the summer and weren't able to. But any move for a striker would have to be right for this club to do anything.”
