Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton was delighted with his team’s performance in a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Watford at the Amex Stadium, but admitted his players could have made things more comfortable by taking their chances.

The Seagulls ended a spell of seven games without victory with three points against the Hornets, thanks to a Pascal Gross winning goal, and Hughton highlighted the importance of getting back to winning ways.

He said, “It felt like a big win. It was a very good performance that deserved the win. The only thing that we’ve got to stop doing is applying more pressure on ourselves.

“I felt the performance was worthy of more than a 1-0 scoreline, and of course, until that goal goes in, you’re applying that little bit more pressure on yourselves.

“When you’ve got a side that are as good offensively as Watford are, and you restrict them to minimal chances, certainly no clear-cut chances, it shows that you’ve put in a good defensive performance.

“We also had really good opportunities ourselves, to make sure we won this game a little bit more comfortably.

“But that’s the next phase for us, to try and take these games on a little bit and relieve that pressure on ourselves.”

Albion come up against Chelsea on Boxing Day, and with Hughton realistic about the task his players face at Stamford Bridge, he admitted how important it was to pick up maximum points against the Hornets.

“It’s one that we needed. We’ve got Chelsea on Boxing Day and there won’t bee too many that fancy us or expect us to get anything there.

“With that being the case in particular, it was important that we picked up something and that allows us to go into that Chelsea game with a little bit more confidence.

“We need to make sure that in the games where we know we have a better chance of getting something, that we put in performances like we did today.

“It was a good all-round performance and we certainly need to take that on.”
