Brighton & Hove Albion succumbed to their second FAWSL Spring Series defeat after losing 1-0 to Durham this afternoon.

Sarah Wilson’s header was enough to seal all three points for the league leaders in a lunchtime clash at New Ferrens Park.

The hosts started the match brightly and could have taken the lead when Caroline Dixon’s shot from distance flashed just wide of the post.

Albion goalkeeper Emma Byrne was then forced into action and made a fine save to keep out Zoe Ness’s effort at the near post.

Durham’s early pressure reaped dividends with 18 minutes on the clock, as Wilson headed home Beth Hepple’s corner to give the Wildcats the lead.

Kate Natkiel had Albion’s first chance of the game, but she drilled her shot wide after being set up by Alessia Russo.

Hepple was the provider for Durham again, this time for Nicola Gibson, who saw her shot blocked before Byrne saved well to deny Nicki Gears.

The Seagulls sought to get back into the game when Sophie Perry’s ball into the box was met by Hollie Olding at the back post, but Rachael Laws made a comfortable save.

Following a cagey start to the second half, the game sprang into life when Hepple connected with Ness’s cross and her shot cannoned off the crossbar.

Tyler Dodds then waltzed her way through the Albion defence, but her shot was saved by Byrne.

Ness had another opportunity to double Durham’s lead, but flashed her strike just wide of the target.

Goalscorer Wilson then drifted a set-piece into the box only for Dodds to fire over at the back post.

Ness could have added another goal for Durham in stoppage time, but her curling effort just cleared the crossbar and the game finished 1-0.
