The shot-stopper spoke after being named in the EFL's Team of the Season.

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper David Stockdale insists reaching the Premier League with his team-mates this season is more important than achieving personal accolades, following his inclusion in the EFL Team of the Season.

Stockdale was chosen as the first-choice goalkeeper across all three divisions at Sunday night’s EFL Awards 2017, and the shot-stopper is keen to continue his good form into next season.

He said, “I’d give that away for promotion right now [Team of the Season inclusion]. Personal awards this season aren’t everything, there’s a lot more underlying.

“I just want to show what I can do and this year I’ve done well. Hopefully I can carry that on next season.

“It’s within touching distance, we know what we’ve got to do and it’s in our hands. We’ve just got to believe in ourselves, go out and do it.

“There’s no easy games in this league. We go to Wolves and that’s our first mission. We want to get all three points there, and if we do that, then I firmly believe we’ll be well on our way.”

The Seagulls are currently 12 points ahead of third-placed Huddersfield Town, and although his team are within touching distance of England’s top flight, Stockdale stressed there is still work to be done.

“We’re not promoted yet. Even with two wins, they could still turn around a goal difference of 28.

“We’ve got so many quality players and how many times this season have I said that our teams spirit is what will get us through?

“We’ve got a chairman that believes in us, a manager that’s good enough to manage above us, but wants to do it with us.

“My wish is to thank those people, and I think the community of Brighton and the chairman deserve Premier League football.”
