Albion's midfielder is urging his team-mates to secure top spot.

Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Steve Sidwell insists his team-mates will do everything to secure the Championship title after winning promotion to the Premier League on Monday.

The Seagulls need just three points from their final three games to go up as champions, and Sidwell made it clear that Chris Hughton’s team are focused on finishing first, ahead of Friday’s game against Norwich City at Carrow Road.

He said, “We’re not going to rest on our laurels and say ‘that’s it, we’re promoted now’, we want to win the league and that goes for every member in that changing room.

“I’ve been lucky enough to lift the trophy before and it’s a great feeling. Destiny awaits, we’ve got a couple of games to clinch the title and that’s what we want to achieve.

“The league table doesn’t lie, we deserve to be where we are. To a man, we’ve done this together and it’s fully deserved.”

Sidwell, who won the EFL's Mitre Goal of the Year award, has made 34 appearances in all competitions for the Seagulls this season, and he discussed his involvement in Albion’s promotion-winning squad.

“I believe in my ability and knew that when I get the chance to play games, I can play well. I’ve had a chance to nail down a spot and I’ve done that on occasions.

“I’ve been pulled out a couple of times, which I think has been a bit harsh [laughs], but I understand that we’ve got a fantastic squad and the gaffer’s got hard decisions to make.”

The midfielder praised Chris Hughton for his positive reputation within the game, and expressed his delight for the Albion boss, who led the club back into England’s top flight for the first time in 34 years.

“You talk to anyone in the game, they’ve all got great things to say about him [Chris Hughton]. He’s a well-respected man in the footballing world and fully deserves everything that he’s got.”
