Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-18s were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa on Saturday.
An 80th-minute strike from Harvey Knibbs was enough to secure the hosts all three points, in a closely-contested contest at the club’s Bodymoor Heath Training Ground.
Ian Buckman’s side made a bright start to the match, as Sam Rolph came close early on with a header that was blocked on the line from Danny Mandroiu’s corner.
Reece Meekums also tried his luck in the opening 20 minutes after latching onto Rian O’Sullivan’s cross, but guided his shot just wide.
The young Irishman went close to breaking the deadlock again in the second half, when his header was blocked near the goalmouth.
Villa scored the only goal of the game when a free-kick was played into the box and Knibbs fired home from close range.
Alex Cochrane came within inches of finding an equaliser in the closing stages, but the Villans held on.
