HUGHTON'S BIG HITTERS

31 October 2016

A look back at some of Albion's biggest Amex victories.

Chris Hughton guided Brighton & Hove Albion to another huge victory at the Amex on Saturday, as the Seagulls swept aside Norwich City 5-0.

However, it was not the first time Albion have put four or more goals past a side under the former Newcastle manager’s stewardship, so we have looked back at Hughton’s biggest Amex wins.

ALBION 4 LEEDS 0

Fresh from putting four goals past Bristol City at Ashton Gate, the Seagulls maintained their ruthless streak in front of goal in a first-half blitz of Leeds United. Liam Rosenior won a penalty which was duly tucked away by Tomer Hemed, and before Hemed added his second, Liam Cooper turned into his own net. Lewis Dunk then powered a header home to see Albion race into a 4-0 lead in a 20-minute period.

ALBION 5 FULHAM 0

Hemed went one better as he hit a hat-trick against Fulham in a five-star Albion display. The Israeli put Albion 2-0 up at the break, before Bruno swept home a third from close range. The striker completed his hat-trick in the 79th minute, while Anthony Knockaert rounded off a memorable evening late on.

ALBION 4 QPR 0

Just four days after hammering Fulham, another London side faced similar treatment, as the Seagulls put four past Queens Park Rangers. After a fairly low-key first half, French magician Knockaert broke the deadlock with an exquisite free-kick in injury-time. Just six minutes into the second-half, Jiri Skalak doubled Albion’s advantage with the club’s goal of the season, before Connor Goldson and Knockaert again, added extra gloss to the scoreline.

ALBION 5 NORWICH 0

With both sides tipped for promotion and sitting in second and fourth respectively, this result was put down as Hughton’s best win of his Albion tenure. Michael McGovern’s early blunder gave Glenn Murray an easy opener, as the Seagulls carried a narrow advantage in at half-time. However, Albion turned on the style in the last 30 minutes, as Norwich capitulated, with Murray doubling the lead while Dunk headed in to make it 3-0. Murray then completed his hat-trick, but never to be left out, Knockaert provided a delightful late finish to complete the most magnificent of victories for Albion.

OTHER BIGGEST AMEX WINS

Gus Poyet’s Albion side of 2012/13 remain the only Seagulls side to hit six goals in one game at the Amex during a 6-1 hammering of Blackpool. In the same season, Albion also defeated Barnsley 5-1 and Huddersfield 4-1 when Leo Ulloa grabbed the first-ever Amex hat-trick. The Seagulls never hit more than three goals in a home game under Oscar Garcia or Sami Hyypia, however Oscar’s side did win 4-1 away at future Premier League Champions Leicester City.
