HUGHTON DELIGHTED WITH UGLY WIN

22 October 2016

Albion's manager was happy to grind out a victory today.

Brighton & Hove Albion boss Chris Hughton praised his team, as they won ugly against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

The Albion manager felt his team were not at their best as Dale Stephens hit the winner in the second half, to make it eight games without defeat, a run which includes six clean sheets.

Hughton admitted, "We certainly weren’t at our best, particularly in that first half. It’s not a game I can say we deserved to win, but these are tough games where you don’t play particularly well.

"It was that type of game, it was scrappy. Defensively we stopped them having the chances that would enable them to win the game, but we were nowhere near our best today."

"We did restrict them to minimal chances and the best two chances of the game. Dale’s goal was a great finish. Sam Baldock’s chance in the first half was probably the best of the game."

Hughton was applauded for making a double change, bringing on Jamie Murphy and Stephens, with both involved in the winning goal.

"I could’ve made substitutions at half time. I could look at the team and we were nowhere near our level, that would be everybody. What we do have in the team is the quality to turn games, and these are the games that matter even more when you don’t play particularly well and shown enough in the team to get a win.

"What I said at half-time was not as stern as on other occasions. Generally we were so bad as a team, that it was quite simple really. We didn’t need to say too much, we just needed to do better in what we had done.

"It was an excellent finish by Dale for the goal. When you see it, the ball comes across and it bobbles a bit. A part from the power, he’s got to be precise with the contact and it was a brilliant goal.

"I'm delighted for him as he's had a difficult time of late, but that’s because of the competition we have, and he’s had one of two little injury issues which has taken away a few training days.

"I’m really pleased, he’s been very committed after what happened in the summer, and the crowd have helped by giving him a wonderful reception since he came back into the team."
