Albion's manager paid tribute to the winger after tonight's win.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton dedicated tonight’s crucial 2-0 victory over Bristol City to Anthony Knockaert.

The players all took part in a poignant celebration after Steve Sidwell’s first goal, as Knockaert’s shirt was lifted into the air following an emotional week for the whole squad.

He said, “It’s affected them greatly because Anthony is a very popular player, he’s one that enjoys being around the club and enjoys training.

“He’s never late and is a great professional. The players’ performance showed that this win was dedicated to him, certainly on [Steve Sidwell] Siddy’s goal.

“This is an individual that means an awful lot to us, it’s been a tough period for Anthony and the lads felt it for him. They dedicated that goal and win to him.”

The opening goal was a moment of magic from Sidwell after he spotted City goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell off his line, and the Albion manager praised the quality of the 50-yard strike.

“It was a super goal. I thought we were a little bit nervous before that, but that goal settled any nerves we might have had beforehand.

“It was one of those where as soon as he struck it, I knew it was in. It was a difficult one for the goalkeeper, because I think it was unexpected particularly on his left foot.

“But it was certainly a wonderful opener for us and it certainly calmed us down.”

The Seagulls boss was delighted with his side’s defensive discipline and hailed the displays of both Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy at the heart of the back four.

“I certainly think we can play better, but as a team we looked solid and in the two centre-halves we’ve got, particularly Dunky, they’ve had to defend well with two big players up there.

“They had to form a good line, win their headers and with Dale [Stephens] and Siddy in front, they swept up a lot. They didn’t have a clear opportunity in 90 minutes and that’s a really good display by the team.”
