LOOK BACK: DERBY AWAY 2015/16

22 June 2016

Albion and Derby drew in a gripping contest last season.

Brighton & Hove Albion will face Derby County at the iPro Stadium on the opening day of the 2016/17 campaign, and if last season’s meeting is anything to go by, it should be another cracker.

The Seagulls headed into the game in December sitting top of the Sky Bet Championship table with a two-point lead over Middlesbrough, and were five points clear of the third-placed Rams, who had a game in hand.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw, which saw Derby twice recover from a goal down to claim a share of the spoils.

Manchester United loanee James Wilson got Albion off to a perfect start with a deft finish in the 22nd minute.

Former Brighton loanee, Bradley Johnson, came back to haunt his old club with a header at the far post to make it 1-1 in the 41st minute.

Another loanee, Rajiv van La Parra, ended a swift counter-attack with a fine strike to put Brighton 2-1 up with 15 minutes left on the clock.

However, just as Chris Hughton’s men looked like claiming all three points, the hosts were awarded a penalty after Gordon Greer was penalised for a challenge on Johnny Russell.

Chris Martin stepped up to fire the ball past David Stockdale with two minutes left on the clock.

Despite a frustrating end to the game, the result extended Albion’s unbeaten league run to 20 games and maintained their two-point lead at the top, after Middlesbrough were held to a goalless draw by Birmingham City.
