2015/16 SEASON REVIEW: AUGUST

1 June 2016

The first in a month-by-month review of the season.

Brighton & Hove Albion had a strong start to the season, winning their opening three games of the season in all competitions.

With seven games to play in August, the Seagulls kicked-off the English football season at home with a 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest. Kazenga LuaLua scored the only goal of the game in the 50th minute with a trademark strike.

Brighton's first away game of the season saw them face Southend United in the Capital One Cup, where once again, LuaLua stepped up to seal the winner in the 93rd minute, securing Albion’s place in the second round.

Tomer Hemed struck a late winner at Fulham from the penalty spot to grab all three points, winning 2-1 in the next league outing.  Sam Baldock’s goal after 30 minutes was cancelled out by Fulham’s Tom Cairney just before half-time.

The following Tuesday saw a third consecutive away game against Huddersfield Town. Beram Kayal scored the club’s fastest goal of the season after 17 seconds, but his goal was cancelled out by Jacob Butterfield in the 54th minute to earn the Terriers a point.

LuaLua’s fine early-season form continued for the visit of Blackburn Rovers to the Amex, as his strike was enough for the Seagulls to claim all three points. But the result paled into insignificance following the tragic events at Shoreham air show which took place earlier in the day, as 11 people lost their lives.

The matches came thick and fast for Hughton’s men, with a trip to Walsall in the Capital One Cup second round.

A much-changed Seagulls side seemed to be on their way through after Jake Forster-Caskey’s penalty gave Chris Hughton’s men a half-time lead. The League One side equalised through Milan Lalkovic, before Rico Henry hit the winner in the 86th minute.

The month’s action culminated in a thrilling 3-2 victory away at Ipswich Town. LuaLua and Tomer Hemed put Albion 2-0 up, but the Tractor Boys wiped out the deficit through strikes from Freddie Sears and David McGoldrick. The third and decisive goal came courtesy of Hemed to seal the win.

Albion boss Hughton and LuaLua were rewarded for the team’s fine start to the campaign, picking up the SkyBet Manager and Player of the Month awards respectively.
