AITC BOWEL CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

14 January 2016

Albion in the Community’s new cancer awareness campaign is being backed by Stephanie Moore – the widow of England’s World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore.

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer in the UK, but when caught at its earliest stage, nine in ten people will survive the disease for five years or more.

AITC’s campaign has received high-profile support from Stephanie Moore, whose late husband Bobby Moore led England to triumph in 1966, but later died from the condition aged just 51.

She launched the Bobby Moore Fund in partnership with Cancer Research UK in 1993 and has been campaigning to raise awareness of the disease ever since.

And she backed AITC’s campaign with a message to fans. She said, “If diagnosed at its earliest stage, five-year relative survival is more than 95%.

“So, do your screening kit when it arrives, know the symptoms and make sure you see your GP if you notice any changes. It could just save your life."

Symptoms to look out for include: blood in your faeces, looser faeces or a persistent change in bowel habit, a feeling that you haven’t emptied your bowel properly after going to the toilet, a pain or lump in your stomach and weight loss for no obvious reason.

Further details on the campaign, which is being run in partnership with NHS Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group and Brighton & Hove City Council, are available online at www.speakupagainstcancer.org.

Visitors to the site can enter for a free prize draw to win a signed Brighton & Hove Albion shirt.

Volunteers from AITC will also tour local workplaces and community groups to discuss the symptoms.
