The winger reflected on a memorable night.
Anthony Knockaert dedicated his goal and man-of-the-match performance to his late brother, after Brighton & Hove Albion’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest last night.
The Frenchman’s elder sibling Steve would have celebrated his birthday yesterday, but he sadly passed away seven years ago and Knockaert reflected on a poignant night.
He said, “This one was especially for my brother because it was his birthday today. It was important to make him proud and it was emotional too because my family were in the stand. I was very happy.
“As soon as I woke up I thought about him, because it was his birthday today and it was the first game since I started my career that I could play a game dedicated to my brother.
“I wanted to make him proud and obviously I am very happy for him and my family, it’s a great memory.
“As soon as I scored, I was thinking about him straight away and it made me cry because it’s not easy to lose someone in your life, but I am always trying to make him proud.
“That was the best thing I could do; it was an extra motivation for me and I think I showed that.”

The 24-year-old also praised the overall performance from the team and insists the frustration of missing out on promotion last season is now firmly in the past.
“We wanted a good performance in our first league game at home and I think we made the fans proud. That’s what we need to do every game at home. We need to be hard to beat here and we showed that.
“We have all forgotten about last season now. It was obviously a big disappointment, but every game is important in the Championship and we need to keep going.”
Knockaert says he is not concerned by the speculation linking him with a move away from the club and wants to stay for the long term.
“I just focus on my football and on my current team. I am very happy here and there is no way I will be distracted.
“I just want to work hard for the team and do everything for the club. My team-mates have been brilliant since I have been here. There is no way I am thinking about anything else. My future is here and for sure I will stay here.”
