Emma Koivisto has joined Albion from Swedish top-flight side Gothenburg FC.

Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of Finland international Emma Koivisto on an 18-month contract from Swedish top-flight side Gothenburg FC.

The 26-year-old defender is an international teammate of midfielder Nora Heroum, has 58 senior caps and has scored twice for her country.

She was part of the squad which has qualified for the European Championships which will be hosted by England in 2022.

Having received her international clearance, Emma arrives on the south coast having won the Swedish top-flight with Gothenburg last year, as well as the Finnish championship in 2017 with FC Honka.

Head coach Hope Powell said, “We're delighted to welcome Emma to Brighton. She has lots of experience of top-level football in Europe and America and we think she will add a lot to the squad.

“She is versatile, so she can play in different positions, is good on the ball and tactically aware. I've been really impressed with how she has settled into the squad this week and we look forward to seeing her in a Brighton shirt soon.”

Having come through the ranks at the women's side representing HJK Helsinki she made her debut for HJK in 2010, before signing for Honka two years later. She spent three years in America with Florida State Seminoles, before moving to Sweden in 2018.

Koivisto has also represented her country at youth level, from under-16 up to under-20 level before making her senior debut in 2012. She has been allocated squad number 12.
