Brighton & Hove Albion defender Uwe Huenemeier is relishing the battle to maintain his place in the side.
The German defender bolstered Albion’s already strong defensive ranks following his arrival in the summer and has contested a keen battle with Lewis Dunk and Gordon Greer for a place at the heart of the Seagulls’ defence.
He said, “It was a new situation for me not being in the team, but there are a lot of matches this season and nobody will play all 46 games.
“They [Dunk and Greer] did well in the match against Cardiff and that is not a problem for me. In the next match, Gordon Greer got injured and it was then my time again and I have to prove myself.
“If I do my best, then I give myself the best possible chance to stay in the team for as long as possible.
“It is important to have a good mentality in the team, as everybody works for the same aim.
“That is really important; we have a good, competitive squad and we now need some of the other players, because we have a few injuries in the team.”

Huenemeier was keen to stress that Albion’s league position does not count for too much at this stage of the season.
“At the moment we don’t look at the league table, because it’s a long season for us and we only look at the next game.
“We know that it’s a really tough match against Reading this Saturday, and on Tuesday against Sheffield Wednesday.
“We know we have done very well, so we don’t need to look at the table. It’s up to us to show on Saturday why we are on the top of the league.”
The 29-year-old is well aware of the Royals’ attacking threat and has come across two of their players from his time in Germany.
“Nick Blackman has scored a lot of goals for them, but it’s not all about him because they have other good players as well.
“I know a few of their players; Lucas Piazon and Danny Williams are both great players and I have faced them in the Bundesliga.
“We will have to be aware of both of those players, but we will be ready for them.”
