Southgate's team, who also face Sweden and Italy in the group stages, are looking to become the first England side to win the Euros since 1984, however they must win their first game at the tournament since beating Spain in 2009 after suffering two consecutive group stage exits in 2013 and 2011 without winning a match.
England’s best recent performance in the tournament was indeed in 2009. After topping their group the Three Lions eliminated Sweden on penalties in the last four but eventual succumbed to a German side featuring six future World Cup winners, losing 4-0 in the final.
