CALDERON: NO HESISTATION IN SIGNING

16 May 2015

Inigo Calderon is thrilled to have signed a one-year contract extension at Brighton & Hove Albion and says he had no hesitation in signing for another season.

Albion’s Player of the Year is now looking ahead to next season and is eager to help the team start the new campaign as strongly as possible.

He told seagulls.co.uk, “It’s a good feeling and a relief. I don’t like the waiting game, but we had to find out which league we were going to be playing in first and now I feel very happy. It’s something that I always wanted to do.

“I realise that every year it gets harder to stay at the club and prove you are good enough; I know that because I’ve been here for the past five years.

“The aim now as a team is to start better than we did last year. We want to be in the top six in the Championship, but so do all the other 23 teams in the league.

“We need to respect how tough this division is and for me, the most important thing is that we start pre-season well and be ready for the start of the new season.

“In the bigger picture I would like to make the fans feel proud of the team, as a matchday is a very important day for them.”

The 33-year-old then expressed his gratitude to the supporters after a difficult season and admits he is still surprised to have been voted as their Player of the Season.

“They are always exactly the same with me, but I don’t know why because I don’t think I’m a particularly special player.

“I’m just a normal, honest guy and as there weren’t many great football moments, they perhaps appreciated my commitment on the pitch, which I’ve always had.”

The full-back was also delighted that Casper Ankergren had been given a new deal and paid testament to the Dane’s personality.

“I’m very pleased for him because he’s a good guy. It’s tough when you are not playing to get another year, but it shows the quality he has and the type of person he is.”
