HUGHTON ON: DERBY

11 December 2015

In Chris Hughton’s pre-match press conference, the Brighton and Hove Albion manager delivered the team news, reviewed Solly March’s progress and last Saturday’s game against Charlton, assessed the threat posed by Derby County and spoke about the prospect of a hectic festive schedule.

Team News: "We'll assess Inigo Calderon. He trained for most of the session this morning, but we'll have another look at him today.

"Unfortunately for us, the two players that can play in the left-back position are ruled out [Gaetan Bong and Liam Rosenior]. But we do have Adam Chicksen and Calderon who can play there.

"Andrew Crofts is still out at the moment but he will train tomorrow in view to being part of a squad possibly on Tuesday against QPR or next Saturday against Middlesbrough."

Solly March’s Progress: "I think Solly March has been excellent so far this season. The nice part for him was the England under-21 game at the Amex against Switzerland, which was a real confidence booster.

"Over this past month he has been able to take his performances to another level and we have wanted him to get assists and score more. That's an area where we still feel he can develop further. When you are a wide player, the expectation is to beat players and that is very difficult to maintain week-in week-.out. The more games he plays, the stronger he’ll get, and that’s being proved at this moment in time."

Derby's Threat: "Saturday sees two good teams come together and I don't think we are where we are by coincidence. We have played well enough over the season to warrant the place we are currently in.

"Derby fall into that bracket as well, they are on a good run and have a very strong team. They recruited big and well in the summer and they are a club with expectations to achieve promotion. You only have to look at their recruitment over the summer to see that."

Reflections on Saturday: "Certainly for a long period on Saturday it didn't look like we were going to get anything out of it, but we did and I'm hopeful we can learn from that. The fightback, character and resilience shown in the squad was outstanding and that is something we will need coming into these few matches.

"The unfortunate thing after Saturday is that you are only on a high for a couple of days, before focusing on the next game. That’s what we need to do if we want to win the next match, we can’t keep looking back at previous results."

Busy Christmas: "There are a lot of games over the Christmas period and going into January. It's certainly important we don't pick up anymore injuries. You need to remember every club has a lot of fixtures, it’s just who can handle it best. We have two very tough away games to start with but your approach has to be exactly the same; recovery becomes extremely important.”
