U18 REPORT: ALBION 3 ASTON VILLA 0

22 September 2014

Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-18s beat Aston Villa 3-0 on Saturday thanks to a Jordan Maguire-Drew hat-trick.

Albion broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, as James Tilley got in a one-on-one situation out wide and pulled the ball back for Maguire-Drew to finish.

He netted Albion’s second goal five minutes after the break; a superb team goal involving Dessie Hutchinson and Connor Tighe, who combined to play Maguire-Drew through on goal and the forward finished in clinical fashion.

The Seagulls ended the game as a contest just five minutes later, when Hutchinson found Tighe on the wing. The latter produced a fine bit of individual skill to set up Maguire-Drew once again to complete his three-goal haul.

The win could have been even more emphatic, as further chances fell to Tilley and Tighe and coach Simon Rusk was delighted with the manner of the victory.

He told seagulls.co.uk, “I thought it was an excellent performance by the boys and we fully deserved our 3-0 win after a very dominant display.

“I thought the players delivered a tactical understanding of what we do in possession and technically they nailed the passing and dribbling aspects of the game. We’re not just a good passing side, we’ve got some individuals that can run with the ball and get at people, so it was very good to watch at times.

“Jordan Maguire-Drew got a hat-trick, but he would be the first to admit that there was some great team play and he finished off a couple of really great moves.

“We look like a threat going forward at the minute, but more importantly we’re playing an exciting brand of football. We’re not just passing the ball around, we’re passing and winning games which is pleasing.

“I don’t get too carried when we win a game nor do I get too disheartened when we lose one. Credit to the boys, but like every week I’ll look at the performance and they’ll look at their performance and we’ll see how we can improve it collectively and individually once again.”

ALBION: Doherty (GK); Collar, Barclay, White, Cox; Hutchinson, Wiltshire (Courtney 70), Maguire-Drew, Tilley; Mar-Larusson (Rowe-Hurst 70), Tighe. Subs not used: Meyers, Hobbs, Horncastle.
