HEAD-TO-HEAD: BLACKPOOL

18 September 2014

Meetings between Brighton & Hove Albion and Blackpool have been relatively sparse over the years, and the two sides have only met on a total of 28 occasions.

Albion just shade the overall head-to-head record with ten victories, compared to nine for the Tangerines and nine draws.

The very first meeting between the teams on the south coast was back on 30th December 1972, when the Seagulls were beaten 2-1 at the Goldstone.

Here are three matches from the archives:

Saturday 20th April 2013
Championship
Brighton 6-1 Blackpool

Albion cruised to victory over Blackpool to move within one victory over guaranteeing a place in the Championship play-offs. Will Buckley gave the Seagulls a perfect start with a strike from 20 yards before Matthew Upson doubled their advantage with a close-range finish from inside the six-yard box. Andrea Orlandi made it 3-0 just before the half-time whistle as he produced a low shot into the bottom right corner and David Lopez’s deflected drive made it 4-0. Dean Hammond scored an own-goal to reduce the deficit to three, but a brace from Ashley Barnes in the last 15 minutes secured an emphatic victory.

This match was among a series of high-scoring fixtures between the two sides throughout the 1990s and Blackpool arrived at the Goldstone with slender hopes of securing a play-off place. Paul McCarthy and John Byrne were on target for Albion on the day, while Andy Watson and Tony Ellis netted for the Tangerines. The Seagulls went on to finish 16th in Division Two, while Blackpool finished in 12th place.
Saturday 1st April 1995
Football League Division Two
Brighton 2-2 Blackpool

Albion continued an impressive start to their Division Two title-winning campaign with a convincing victory over the Tangerines at Withdean.Charlie Oatway broke the deadlock after a 25-yard run before Richard Carpenter scored a second from a Lee Steele cross in the 47th minute. Steele then scored Albion’s third just past the hour mark with a fine header after some good work by Paul Brooker, before setting up Bobby Zamora to wrap up the win with a header.
