Brighton & Hove Albion women secured a safe passage into the Premier League Cup third round following a comfortable 4-0 victory over Derby County at Burrowash Victoria.

The first half started on a rather cagey note with few chances for both sides; the best of which fell to Amy Green, whose strike from distance cannoned off the crossbar with Rams keeper Jenny Simpson standing motionless inside the goal.

Albion edged closer to breaking the deadlock as the half wore on, as Fliss Gibbons shot over the bar after a well-worked move.

Charlotte Gurr then saw her effort tipped over the bar by Simpson before Deanna Cooper sent the Seagulls on their way to victory with a bullet header from Lucy Somes's cross.

Gurr had the opportunity to double Albion’s advantage just moments before the half-time whistle only to see her shot rebound off the post after a sweeping move forward.

Derby still carried a threat on the counter-attack and had their best chance of the game when Rhian O’Callaghan kneed her effort over the crossbar from inside the six-yard box.

James Marrs’s side then launched a number of attacks in search of a decisive goal, as Gibbons’s header caused a defensive scramble on the line before the Rams eventually cleared the danger.

Kirsty Barton also had an effort cleared off the line, before Gibbons shot wide after being played through one-on-one with Simpson.

The second goal eventually came courtesy of Gibbons who slotted home from close range from Gurr’s delivery on the left-hand side.

The Rams could have set up a nervy last few minutes for Albion when Lauren Steadman was played through on goal, only for Faye Baker to make a superb left handed save.

The Seagulls made the victory more emphatic with two goals in stoppage time, as Gurr’s header from Charley Boswell’s cross on the right beat the outstretched Simpson.

Substitute Jay Blackie added a fourth goal in almost the last action of the game with a superb lob from distance over Simpson to give Albion a convincing win.

ALBION: Baker (GK); C. Cooper, D. Cooper (Perry 74), Taylor; Boswell, Carter, Barton (Blackie 74), Green (Owen 74), Somes; Gurr, Gibbons.
