REPORT: ALBION 1 WIGAN 0
Brighton & Hove Albion recorded a much-needed win as they defeated Wigan Athletic 1-0 at the Amex.
Gary Gardner’s strike, after just 54 seconds, proved to be the winner as Albion held on to end the Latics’ six-game unbeaten run.
Sami Hyypia's side got off to a flying start and took the lead with less than a minute on the clock when Gardner finished low past Scott Carson from Sam Baldock's cross.
It could have been two in the 16th minute when Kazenga LuaLua picked out Joao Teixeira, however the Portuguese’s effort flew back off the crossbar.
Wigan then began to find their feet and pressed for an equaliser, but Martyn Waghorn’s glancing header fell just wide of Christian Walton’s post after a clever first-time cross from Roger Espinoza.
Waghorn was in the thick of it again for the Latics, creating space for a shot, however Walton was alert and saved well.
The visitors continued to press and in the 32nd minute Shaun Maloney unleashed a shot on the turn but it flew over the bar.
Four minutes later, Elliott Bennett directed LuaLua’s cross goalwards, however the Norwich loanee failed to get enough power on his header and Carson collected.
In the 37th minute James Tavernier tried his luck with a curling free-kick but Walton got down well to collect the danger.
Eight minutes into the second half the Latics had a double chance to level the scores. First, Waghorn saw his shot blocked by Lewis Dunk before Walton saved well from Adam Forshaw’s long-range follow-up.
In the 58th minute, the lively Waghorn did well to create space for a shot but Walton was again equal to it before Maloney’s long-range effort flew just wide of the post.
It was one-way traffic as Wigan continued to search for the equaliser, however the Seagulls defended resolutely to limit the Latics’ chances and protect Walton’s goal.
In the dying moments Greg Halford came on to shore things up, making his debut after signing a short-term loan from Nottingham Forest.
With the last kick of the game Maloney fired a free-kick over the bar to ensure man-of-the-match Walton kept his clean sheet intact and Albion collected the points.
