Albion manager Sami Hyypia said, "Craig wants to play. Since he's returned from the injury his match time has been limited and he wants to play.
"This move means he can play regularly and be able to fully regain his match fitness, and in a month's time he will be fitter, sharper and hopefully benefitted from scoring some goals at Peterborough."
Mackail-Smith returns to the London Road club that he hit 99 goals for during a four-year spell before he joined the Seagulls three years ago, hitting 21 goals in 91 league games.
