Nathan Jones says he was delighted by the display of Albion’s blend of youngsters and experienced players in the 3-1 win at Port Vale.
Goals from Solly March, Rohan Ince and Jon Obika put the Seagulls in the hat for the FA Cup fifth round and the assistant head coach was full of praise for how the side performed.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “The youngsters are in our squad because we believe in the players that we have here, they are in the squad for a reason.
“We are proud of our youngsters and everyone that scored was under the age of 23 and that is very pleasing.
“But all the players put in a good shift. You only have to look at Matt Upson, who has played for England and has played hundreds of games in the Premier League - his attitude today was phenomenal.
“He led by example, all the experienced players did, like [Inigo] Calderon, who was excellent today.
“We are very pleased with the attitude, the performance and more than anything, the result.”
The Welshman confessed that there was concern prior to the game that the heavy hailstorm may have put the match under threat.
“We knew the pitch would be soft because there had been quite a bit of rain but it is a good pitch here and we were looking forward to it.
“But then there was a monsoon before we went out to warm up and it really did affect the pitch.
“We thought that any more downpours would put the game in jeopardy. As it was when we came out it started coming down again but the pitch held up. It was difficult but made for a good cup tie.”
With Albion now set to face Burnley on Tuesday night Jones hailed the club for their support in making the back-to-back away fixtures as easy to cope with as possible.
“The club have been fantastic to us; we came up yesterday and stayed at St. George’s Park and we will be there until Monday, then travel across to Burnley, so we have really halved the journey.
“The club have enabled us to stay up and not have to travel back to Brighton and then back up again.
“So it is really good and we have great training facilities to use tomorrow and Monday as well, then we can head over for Tuesday's game far more refreshed than we would have been.”
